Produced by Bob Johnston, At Folsom Prison was recorded during two shows at Folsom State Prison on January 13, 1968, with the stronger morning performance forming the bulk of the album, backed by June Carter, Carl Perkins, the Tennessee Three, and the Statler Brothers. The lead single “Folsom Prison Blues” became Cash’s first top-40 pop hit since 1964 and topped the country singles chart after Columbia trimmed a controversial verse. The album itself hit number one on the country albums chart, was eventually certified triple platinum, and revived Cash’s then-flagging career, leading directly to his own ABC television show. It has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry and is routinely ranked among the greatest albums of all time.
