Recorded for around $4,000 at a small studio in Garland, Texas in January 1975, Red Headed Stranger was produced entirely by Nelson himself, who deliberately stripped the arrangements down to voice, guitar, and piano after fuller overdubs failed to suit the material. The loose narrative concept album follows a preacher on the run after a killing, and its spare sound was reportedly so unadorned that Columbia executives worried it sounded unfinished. The single “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” became Nelson’s first number-one hit as a vocalist, and the album itself topped the country charts and has since been certified double-platinum. Widely regarded as a landmark of the 1970s outlaw country movement, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry and remains one of the most acclaimed albums in the genre’s history.
