songs and instrumentals is a companion pair of albums by Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker, both written and recorded April–May 2020 in a one-room cabin in Westhampton, Massachusetts, after a tour cancellation and a breakup left her isolated during the early pandemic. Produced and engineered by Phil Weinrobe on an eight-track analog recorder, songs is a stark, intimate solo folk record capturing birdsong, rain, and wood-stove crackle alongside Lenker’s voice and acoustic guitar, while instrumentals offers two long-form ambient guitar pieces recorded in the same sessions. Released October 23, 2020 on 4AD, the pair earned some of the most acclaimed reviews of Lenker’s career, averaging 84 on Metacritic, with critics singling out the raw emotional honesty of songs as among the year’s finest folk records.
