Chet Baker & Art Pepper | Playboys | Vinyl

Recorded October 31, 1956 in Los Angeles for World Pacific Records, Playboys teamed two of cool jazz’s defining horn players, Chet Baker and Art Pepper, backed by a sextet for a session built largely around compositions by Jimmy Heath, with two additional originals contributed by Pepper himself. Tracks like ‘For Minors Only,’ ‘Resonant Emotions,’ and ‘C.T.A.’ showcase the interplay between Baker’s lyrical, understated trumpet and Pepper’s sharper-edged alto, a pairing that captures West Coast jazz’s cooler, more arranged sensibility. The album’s original title and cover art reportedly drew objections from Hugh Hefner over its resemblance to Playboy magazine’s branding, leading to a 1961 reissue retitled Picture of Heath with a different sequence and new artwork. This edition restores the original Playboys title and program, pressed on limited 180g solid orange vinyl.
