Produced by Orrin Keepnews and recorded in 1959, Portrait in Jazz introduced the first Bill Evans Trio lineup, with Scott LaFaro on bass and Paul Motian on drums, arriving just months after Evans’s celebrated work on Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue. The album reimagines standards like ‘Autumn Leaves,’ ‘What Is This Thing Called Love?,’ and ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’ alongside originals such as ‘Peri’s Scope’ and the Evans/Davis co-write ‘Blue in Green,’ with LaFaro’s melodic, forward bass lines elevating the instrument to near-equal footing with the piano. This interactive approach to the piano trio proved deeply influential, reshaping how a generation of jazz musicians thought about group improvisation. It was the first of only two studio albums this specific trio would complete together before LaFaro’s death in 1961.
