Produced by Teo Macero at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio in New York, Time Out was a deliberate experiment in odd meters, pairing Dave Brubeck’s piano with Paul Desmond’s alto saxophone, Eugene Wright’s bass, and Joe Morello’s drums across pieces built on 9/8, 6/4, and the now-iconic 5/4 of ‘Take Five.’ Columbia initially balked at releasing an album with no standards and unconventional rhythms, but Time Out became the first jazz LP to sell a million copies, and ‘Take Five’ became the first jazz single to do the same, climbing to No. 25 on the pop charts. Cover art by S. Neil Fujita and compositions like ‘Blue Rondo à la Turk,’ inspired by Balkan street musicians Brubeck heard on tour, rounded out a record now certified double-platinum and frequently cited among the greatest jazz albums ever made.
