Recorded in Los Angeles in December 1962 under producer Norman Granz and released on Verve in 1963, Night Train finds Oscar Peterson’s trio, with Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums, digging into blues- and swing-era repertoire made famous by Duke Ellington, Jimmy Forrest, and others. The title track and Peterson’s own gospel-tinged closer, ‘Hymn to Freedom,’ which became an anthem of the civil rights movement, bookend a program built on riff-based, groove-heavy playing rather than the trio’s usual virtuosic sprints. Tunes like ‘C Jam Blues,’ ‘Bags’ Groove,’ and ‘Moten Swing’ showcase the unit’s tight, locked-in interplay, a product of years of steady touring together. The album remains one of Peterson’s most accessible and frequently reissued records, prized for its relaxed, blues-drenched swing. This pressing is on limited 180g transparent purple vinyl.
