Nick of Time, released in March 1989 and produced by Don Was, was Bonnie Raitt’s tenth album and the comeback that redefined her career after she’d been dropped by her previous label and gotten sober. Recorded largely live in the studio at Ocean Way in Los Angeles, the record blends two Raitt originals with songs by John Hiatt, Bonnie Hayes, and others, anchored by the title track’s meditation on aging and time. It unexpectedly topped the Billboard 200 a year after release, sold more than five million copies, and swept the 1990 Grammy Awards with three wins including Album of the Year — closing a 17-and-a-half-year gap since Raitt’s first charting record, then the longest in chart history. This pressing marks the album’s 25th anniversary.
