Pinetop Perkins was a Mississippi-born piano player who worked alongside Robert Nighthawk, Muddy Waters, and the Legendary Blues Band before becoming, at nearly 90 years old, a solo Grammy winner in his own right. Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie, released on Austin’s Antone’s Records, gathers the rolling, barrelhouse-rooted piano blues that made him a foundational link between prewar boogie woogie and postwar Chicago electric blues. The title nods to his signature tune, itself a tribute to boogie woogie pioneer Clarence “Pinetop” Smith, whose name Perkins adopted after his own version of the song became a calling card.
