Moanin’ in the Moonlight, released by Chess in 1959, was Howlin’ Wolf’s debut LP, assembling singles cut between 1951 and 1959 that spanned his earliest sides for Sam Phillips in Memphis through his classic Chicago sessions with Willie Dixon. The record includes signature tracks “Smokestack Lightning” and “How Many More Years,” the latter featuring one of the earliest distorted power-chord guitar tones on record. A cornerstone of the Chess blues catalog, the album earned a W.C. Handy Award and was ranked No. 477 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This limited edition reissue is pressed on 180-gram red vinyl.
