Delta Momma Blues is Townes Van Zandt’s fourth studio album, released in 1971 on Tomato/Poppy Records, produced by Kevin Eggers and Ronald Frangipane and recorded at Century Sound Studios in New York City. The album marked a shift away from the Nashville country-folk of his earlier work toward a looser, more blues-inflected sound, featuring the desolate ballad “Tower Song” and the wry “Rake,” inspired by Nikos Kazantzakis’s Saint Francis. Its closing track, “Nothin’,” later found a wider audience when Robert Plant and Alison Krauss covered it on their Grammy-winning 2007 album Raising Sand. Though a commercial afterthought on release, Delta Momma Blues has since become a cult favorite in Van Zandt’s catalog, prized by fans for its stark, unvarnished songwriting.
