Drawing on sessions from April and July 1957 — recorded during the period of Monk’s celebrated Five Spot residency and produced by Orrin Keepnews — this album documents one of the only studio meetings between pianist Thelonious Monk and a young John Coltrane, alongside drummers Shadow Wilson and Art Blakey and bassist Wilbur Ware. Highlights include a definitive reading of the ballad ‘Ruby, My Dear,’ the tricky unison lines of ‘Trinkle, Tinkle,’ and two tracks featuring an expanded septet with Coleman Hawkins, Ray Copeland, and Gigi Gryce. Not released until October 1961, well after both musicians had moved on to greater fame, the album has since been recognized as a crucial document of Monk’s influence on Coltrane’s harmonic thinking during his tenure in Monk’s quartet. It was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007 and even featured as a plot device in the 2015 film ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.’
