Pops Staples recorded the bulk of these tracks with Mavis Staples at Chicago’s Hinge Recording Studio in 1998, shortly before his death in December 2000, leaving the project unfinished. Mavis Staples and producer Jeff Tweedy revisited the tapes in 2014, recording new instrumental parts at Tweedy’s Loft studio in Chicago to complete the album while preserving Pops’ original guitar and vocal performances. The result blends gospel, blues, and soul, featuring Pops’ takes on traditional gospel songs like “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” alongside a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody” and several Staples originals. Released February 17, 2015 on ANTI-/dBpm Records, Don’t Lose This closes out the recording career of a foundational figure in American gospel and soul music, offering a poignant coda to the Staple Singers’ decades-long legacy.
