Originally self-released in 1973 and sold by Barrett largely from the pulpit of his Mount Zion Baptist Church in Chicago, Do Not Pass Me By pairs Barrett’s forty-voice Youth For Christ Choir with tambourines, horns, and organ for a sound that bridges traditional gospel and funk-soul instrumentation. Numero Group remastered the album from the original tapes for this 2017 reissue, part of the label’s ongoing effort to bring Barrett’s privately-pressed 1970s gospel LPs to wider audiences. The album’s centerpiece, the nearly seven-minute “Father I Stretch My Hands,” gained new attention after being sampled by Kanye West on 2016’s The Life of Pablo, introducing Barrett’s music to a new generation of listeners and cementing his place in gospel’s influence on hip-hop and soul sampling culture.
