Recorded across sessions in late 1959 and early 1960 and produced by Teo Macero, Sketches of Spain paired Miles Davis with arranger and conductor Gil Evans for a large-ensemble reworking of Joaquin Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez” alongside original compositions inspired by Spanish and flamenco traditions. The album’s ambitious fusion of jazz improvisation with orchestral and classical forms drew mixed reviews on release but grew into one of Davis’s most celebrated and influential recordings. It won the 1961 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Composition of More Than Five Minutes Duration and has since been certified platinum in the US. This mono pressing preserves the original 1960 Columbia mix as first heard on vinyl.
