Produced largely under his Larry Fisherman alias alongside Big Jerm, ID Labs, Thundercat, Earl Sweatshirt, and 9th Wonder, Faces was originally self-released as a free mixtape in May 2014, blending jazz-inflected boom-bap with dark, confessional lyricism about drug use and self-destruction. It features guest turns from Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, Earl Sweatshirt, Vince Staples, Rick Ross, and Thundercat. Long unavailable on streaming and vinyl, Faces finally received an official commercial release in October 2021, debuting at #3 on the Billboard 200 and setting a hip-hop/R&B vinyl sales record with 32,000 copies sold in its first week. Retrospective critical reassessment has ranked it among Miller’s most acclaimed projects.
