Released on Geffen Records (Domo Records in later reissues), Kojiki takes its name and narrative arc from Japan’s earliest surviving text, an 8th-century chronicle of myth and imperial history, which Kitaro uses as the backbone for a suite of orchestral new age compositions. The record pairs a thirty-four piece string orchestra with eight taiko drummers alongside Kitaro’s synthesizers, creating a widescreen, cinematic sound that marked a stylistic departure from his earlier, more electronic-focused work. Kojiki earned a Grammy nomination and is regarded by fans as one of the defining orchestral new age albums of the early 1990s. This reissue brings the album back to vinyl on Domo Records.
