Released September 29, 2017 on Young Turks, Harmony of Difference features Washington’s West Coast Get Down collaborators — bassist Miles Mosley, drummers Ronald Bruner Jr. and Tony Austin, keyboardists Cameron Graves and Brandon Coleman, and an eight-voice choir — building five short thematic pieces (‘Desire,’ ‘Humility,’ ‘Knowledge,’ ‘Perspective,’ and ‘Integrity’) that are woven together in the closing 13-minute epic ‘Truth,’ which combines all five preceding melodies into a single contrapuntal statement. The suite doubled as a visual art piece, debuting alongside a companion film and paintings exhibited at the 2017 Whitney Biennial. Critics received the EP with wide acclaim, and ‘Truth’ later closed out the final season of Showtime’s ‘Homeland.’ The record distills the maximalist spiritual jazz of Washington’s breakout album ‘The Epic’ into a tighter, conceptually unified statement.
