Recorded in a single September 26, 1962 session at Van Gelder Studio and produced by Bob Thiele for Impulse!, this collaboration brought together Duke Ellington — stepping out of his big-band role into a stripped-down quartet setting — with John Coltrane, backed by a rotating rhythm section of Elvin Jones, Jimmy Garrison, Aaron Bell, and Sam Woodyard. The set mixes Ellington standards like ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ and ‘Take the Coltrane’ with Coltrane’s own ‘Big Nick,’ resulting in a relaxed, blues-soaked session unlike either artist’s usual output. Coltrane later called the date one of the great honors of his career, and critics have praised the record for capturing a rare meeting point between swing-era elegance and the more exploratory harmonic language Coltrane was developing at the time.
