Written and recorded in under three weeks in early 2021 with co-producers Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian, Star-Crossed is framed as a modern tragedy in three acts and reflects on the end of Musgraves’s marriage to fellow musician Ruston Kelly. The album debuted at number one on the Top Country Albums chart and number three on the Billboard 200, led by singles “Justified” and “Camera Roll,” the latter earning two Grammy nominations. Its blend of country, pop, and disco textures led the Recording Academy to controversially rule it ineligible for the country categories, reclassifying it as pop for awards purposes. Critics gave it generally strong marks for its emotional candor, even as some felt it fell short of matching the acclaim of its predecessor, Golden Hour.
