John Prine | Oop: the Missing Years | Vinyl

The Missing Years is John Prine’s eighth studio album, released October 8, 1991 on his own Oh Boy Records after he had gone independent from major labels. Produced by Heartbreakers bassist Howie Epstein, the record brought in an all-star cast of guests including Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, and Phil Everly, recorded largely at Epstein’s home studio in Los Angeles and at The Money Pit in Nashville. The title track imagines the unrecorded years of Jesus’s life with characteristic Prine wit, sitting alongside wry, warm songs like “It’s a Big Old Goofy World” and “All the Best.” The album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, marking a critical and commercial comeback that reaffirmed Prine’s standing as one of America’s great songwriters.
