Burnin’, recorded in Chicago in October 1961 and released on Vee-Jay in 1962, marked a turning point for John Lee Hooker as he moved from his solo, foot-stomping style into a full-band electric sound backed by Motown session players including bassist James Jamerson and drummer Benny Benjamin. The album produced Hooker’s biggest hit, “Boom Boom,” which crossed onto the pop charts and became one of the most covered blues songs of the era. This anniversary vinyl edition celebrates the record’s lasting influence on both electric blues and the British Invasion bands who covered it.
