Recorded March 17, 1965 at Van Gelder Studio and produced by Alfred Lion, Maiden Voyage paired Hancock with an extraordinary front line of trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor saxophonist George Coleman, plus the rhythm section of bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, borrowed largely from Miles Davis’s working quintet. Built around a loose nautical theme, the album unfolds through the title track, ‘The Eye of the Hurricane,’ ‘Little One,’ ‘Survival of the Fittest,’ and ‘Dolphin Dance’ — three of which became jazz standards covered for decades afterward. Critics have long ranked it among Hancock’s finest Blue Note dates and a high-water mark of mid-’60s modal jazz, praised for its spaciousness and melodic clarity. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, Maiden Voyage remains a foundational entry point into post-bop; this Classic Vinyl Series pressing keeps the album in quality print for collectors.
