Originally recorded in the late 1950s for Mercury’s celebrated Living Presence series (mono catalog MG 50144, later reissued in stereo as SR 90144), Hi-Fi a la Española captures Frederick Fennell leading the Eastman-Rochester “Pops” Orchestra through vividly colored orchestral arrangements of Spanish and Latin American works, including Lecuona’s “Malagueña,” de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance,” and Torroba’s “Boabdil, the Bullfighter’s Prayer.” The Mercury Living Presence catalog is legendary among audiophiles for its three-microphone recording technique, which captured an unusually natural and dynamic orchestral image for its era. This edition is a half-speed remastered pressing, mastered by Bernie Grundman, preserving the recording’s celebrated wide dynamic range and detail for modern turntables.
