Recorded at Symphony Hall in Boston in January 1996 and produced by engineer Shawn Murphy, Summon the Heroes was released to coincide with the Atlanta Summer Olympics, for which Williams composed the title fanfare as the official Olympic theme, premiered at the opening ceremony on July 19, 1996. The Sony Classical album pairs that new commission with Williams and the Boston Pops’ interpretations of Olympic and ceremonial classics, including his own “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” John Barry’s “Olympic Spirit,” and Vangelis’ “Conquest of Paradise,” alongside “Chariots of Fire” and selections from Orff’s Carmina Burana and Ben-Hur. This 2024 Music On Vinyl reissue, limited to 800 numbered copies on translucent yellow 180-gram vinyl, brings the Grammy-nominated album back to the format for the first time on colored wax.
