Recorded in New York in December 1958 and January 1959 for Riverside Records under producer Orrin Keepnews, Chet finds the trumpeter setting aside his famous vocals to focus purely on horn, backed by a stacked supporting cast that included pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummers Philly Joe Jones and Connie Kay — all veterans of Miles Davis’s rhythm sections. The nine standards, from a spacious ‘Alone Together’ to a wistful ‘It Never Entered My Mind,’ showcase Baker’s lyrical, breathy tone at its most refined, with guitarist Kenny Burrell and reedman Herbie Mann adding color on select tracks. The album is widely regarded as one of the strongest sessions of Baker’s Riverside period and a high point of West Coast cool jazz balladry. This Concord vinyl reissue restores the record to its original nine-track sequence for a new generation of collectors.
