Lonesome as a Shadow, released April 20, 2018 on Son of Davy, was Charley Crockett’s fourth studio album and the first built entirely from his own original songs. Co-produced by Crockett and Matt Ross-Spang (known for his work with John Prine and at Sun Studio), the record was tracked at the historic Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis, giving it a warm, vintage soul-country feel. The twelve songs move between mournful ballads and shuffling honky-tonk, with “Sad & Blue” co-written alongside frequent collaborator Kyle Madrigal. At just thirty minutes, the album showcased Crockett’s growing confidence as a songwriter and further built his reputation as one of the most productive voices in contemporary Texas country.
