Sounds of Silence is Simon & Garfunkel’s second studio album, released January 17, 1966 on Columbia Records after producer Tom Wilson had overdubbed electric guitar, bass, and drums onto the duo’s original acoustic recording of “The Sound of Silence” without their knowledge, turning it into a surprise number-one hit. Built around that single along with “Homeward Bound” and “I Am a Rock,” the album was mostly produced by Bob Johnston and recorded at CBS Studios in New York and Los Angeles through 1965. It reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 and became the foundation of Simon & Garfunkel’s rise from Greenwich Village folk act to one of the defining duos of 1960s pop, blending Paul Simon’s introspective songwriting with the pair’s close, chiming harmonies.
