Produced by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, Catch a Fire was recorded in 1972 at Kingston’s Dynamic Sound, Harry J’s, and Randy’s studios before Blackwell added rock-oriented guitar and keyboard overdubs in London to broaden its crossover appeal. The album blends militant, socially conscious songwriting on cuts like ‘Concrete Jungle’ and ‘Slave Driver’ with the loping grooves of ‘Stir It Up’ and ‘Kinky Reggae.’ Though it sold modestly on release, peaking at #171 on the Billboard 200, Catch a Fire is now recognized as one of the most important reggae albums ever made, ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It launched the Wailers as international recording artists and set the template for reggae’s global breakthrough throughout the 1970s. This Island Records vinyl reissue returns the original nine-track sequence to wax.
