Dylan first tracked the album in New York in September 1974 with Phil Ramone engineering, then, on the advice of his brother David Zimmerman, re-recorded roughly half of it in Minneapolis that December, resulting in a hybrid of stark solo performances and slightly fuller full-band arrangements. Widely read as a chronicle of the breakdown of his marriage, the record includes some of Dylan’s most acclaimed songwriting, including the shifting narrative of “Tangled Up in Blue,” the extended storytelling of “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts,” and the searing “Idiot Wind.” Initial reviews were mixed, but critical opinion shifted quickly, and the album is now near-universally regarded as one of Dylan’s finest achievements and a high-water mark of confessional songwriting. It has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and consistently appears near the top of best-albums-of-all-time lists.
