Produced by Jim Rooney and Prine himself and recorded across several sessions between 1997 and 1999 at Nashville’s Cowboy Arms and Jack’s Tracks studios, In Spite of Ourselves arrived as Prine’s thirteenth studio album and his first full release following his recovery from throat cancer. Each track pairs Prine with a different female vocalist, among them Iris DeMent, on a set of mostly classic honky-tonk and country weepers by writers like Tex Ritter, Onie Wheeler, and Wynn Stewart. The lone original, the ribald title track written by Prine, became one of his most enduring latter-day songs and a staple of his live sets, later covered by artists ranging from Kacey Musgraves to Norah Jones. Critics singled the record out as a warm, playful showcase of classic country songwriting and one of the finer entries in Prine’s catalog.
