Recorded in February 1958 with Ray Ellis and His Orchestra and produced by Irving Townsend, Lady in Satin found Billie Holiday’s voice worn by decades of hard living set against lush, large-scale orchestral arrangements complete with strings and a choir. The stark contrast between her frayed, weathered phrasing and the sweeping strings gives the record an emotional rawness that many critics consider among the most moving vocal performances in jazz history. It would prove to be the last album released in Holiday’s lifetime; she died in July 1959, just over a year later.
