Produced by Irving Townsend and arranged and conducted by Ray Ellis with a lush 40-piece orchestra, Lady in Satin found Billie Holiday, her voice worn by decades of hard living, delivering some of the most emotionally raw performances of her career. Recorded February 19-21, 1958 at Columbia’s 30th Street Studio, the album pairs standards like ‘I’m a Fool to Want You,’ ‘You’ve Changed,’ and ‘But Beautiful’ with Ellis’s cinematic string arrangements, creating a stark contrast between the frailty of Holiday’s voice and the orchestra’s polish. Critical reaction was divided at the time, with some hearing a diminished instrument and others recognizing a singer laying herself bare; the record has since been reassessed as one of the most affecting vocal jazz albums ever made. Holiday died the following year, and Lady in Satin remains one of her final and most personal statements, pressed here on limited 180g solid blue vinyl.
