Marking the first Beach House album not produced by longtime collaborator Chris Coady, 7 was co-produced with Peter Kember, aka Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, and recorded over eleven months across studios in Baltimore, Connecticut, Los Angeles, and Denver before wrapping in December 2017. Singles ‘Lemon Glow,’ ‘Dive,’ ‘Dark Spring,’ and ‘Black Car’ showed Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally pushing beyond their signature shimmering dream pop into denser, more rhythmically driven and occasionally noisier territory, aided by touring drummer James Barone and mixer Alan Moulder. The album earned some of the strongest reviews of the band’s career, with a Metacritic score of 80 and outlets like Vulture calling it their best record yet, and it charted internationally across the UK, US, and Canada following its May 2018 release on Sub Pop.
