Produced by Peter Kember, aka Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, and recorded across studios in upstate New York, Malibu, and Brooklyn, Congratulations found Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser reacting against the massive pop success of singles like ‘Kids’ and ‘Electric Feel’ with a denser, more freeform psychedelic-rock record built for albums rather than singles. Despite the band’s stated resistance to releasing singles, four tracks, including ‘Flash Delirium’ and the sprawling twelve-minute ‘Siberian Breaks,’ were issued to radio and streaming. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and No. 4 in the UK, drawing a mixed but often admiring critical response, with Pitchfork calling it ‘audacious, ambitious, and a little fried.’ This 180g 2LP reissue, remastered from the original analog tapes, spreads the album’s nine tracks across four sides.
