Recorded March 8, 1959 at Van Gelder Studio and produced by Alfred Lion, Just Coolin’ captures the classic Jazz Messengers lineup of trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Bobby Timmons, and bassist Jymie Merritt just weeks before the same band recorded the celebrated live album ‘At the Jazz Corner of the World.’ Blue Note opted to release the club recording instead, leaving this tight studio date — featuring Mobley’s title track and ‘M&M,’ Timmons’s ‘Quick Trick,’ and a version of the standard ‘Close Your Eyes’ — unheard for over six decades. Producer and jazz historian Zev Feldman helped bring the session to light as part of Blue Note’s archival reissue program, restoring a missing chapter of one of hard bop’s most important bands. Just Coolin’ offers a rare studio counterpart to the group’s celebrated live recordings from the same era.
