Released April 7, 2017 on Nonesuch and produced by Steve Epstein, Bach Trios reunites three of the most acclaimed instrumentalists in American music for intimate readings of Bach organ preludes, chorale settings, and chamber sonatas rearranged for cello, mandolin, and double bass. Recorded at The Barn in Washington and mixed at Clubhouse Recording Studios, the album highlights the trio’s improvisatory chemistry, translating Bach’s contrapuntal writing into a folk-and-bluegrass-inflected chamber setting without sacrificing its baroque rigor. The project grew out of the trio’s long friendship and prior collaborations, and was supported by a US tour beginning shortly after release. Critics praised the record for finding fresh expressive possibilities in some of Bach’s most familiar keyboard and organ pieces.
