Self-released as a free download in March 2011 and produced largely by Doc McKinney and Illangelo with additional production from The Weeknd himself, the mixtape traded R&B’s glossy conventions for murky, atmospheric production and unflinching lyrics about drugs, sex, and nightlife excess. “Wicked Games” became his breakout single, while early tracks circulated widely after Drake championed the project on his blog. Critics named it one of the best-reviewed releases of 2011, and it later charted retroactively on the Billboard 200 once streaming became available, going on to platinum certification in Canada. House of Balloons is widely credited with pioneering the “alternative R&B” sound that influenced artists from PartyNextDoor to Frank Ocean. This 10th anniversary 2LP restores the original mixtape’s uncleared samples for the first time on vinyl.
