The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) is the band's Andy Warhol-produced debut, featuring German singer Nico on several tracks and Warhol's iconic peelable banana on the cover art. Notoriously overlooked commercially at the time, the record's frank lyrical subject matter, drug use, S&M, and urban alienation, along with Lou Reed and John Cale's experimental instincts, laid the groundwork for punk, art rock, and alternative music for decades to come. Brian Eno's famous quip that everyone who bought it started a band captures its outsized influence relative to its initial sales.
