Fronted by Morris Day and assembled at Prince’s direction, The Time’s debut was in large part written, arranged, and performed by Prince (credited as producer Jamie Starr), with the band’s own musicians layering vocals and stage presence on top. Extended club cuts like “Cool” and “Get It Up” showcased the tight, minimal Minneapolis funk sound Prince was pioneering, and the album reached the R&B top 10, helping launch The Time as one of the most influential funk acts of the early ’80s and directly shaping the sound of Prince’s own Controversy and 1999. This 40th anniversary Expanded Edition spreads the original album and bonus single edits and alternate mixes across two records, pressed on red and white vinyl.
