Created by Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, who founded ESL Music around the time of the record’s release, the album fuses dub reggae, acid jazz, hip-hop breaks, and bossa nova into an early blueprint for the chill-out downtempo sound that would flourish through the late 1990s. The Guardian described the duo as “sonic pickpockets” for their eclectic, genre-hopping sample work, while Music Week noted the record’s broad appeal to beatheads, post-clubbers, and esoteric indie fans alike. The album has sold over 33,000 copies in the US and remains a foundational release in the trip-hop and downtempo canon. This 2022 reissue was newly remastered for a 180-gram double-LP pressing with additional bonus tracks.
