Produced by Norman Whitfield, Cloud Nine pushed The Temptations away from their polished ballad sound and into wah-wah guitars, dense percussion, and socially conscious lyrics inspired by Sly and the Family Stone. The title track hit number 2 R&B and won the 1969 Grammy Award for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, while ‘Run Away Child, Running Wild’ topped the R&B chart. The album reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 and is regarded as the record that launched Motown’s psychedelic soul era, influencing everything from funk to later concept-driven soul albums. This edition is Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s limited, numbered 180g 45RPM 2LP reissue.
