Self-produced with his backing band the Hillbilly Avengers and cut at Cowboy Arms studio in Nashville, The Ballad of Dood & Juanita tells a linear story of a sharpshooter’s quest through eastern Kentucky to rescue his wife from a gang of outlaws during the Civil War era. Simpson wrote and tracked the entire record in about a week, favoring an intentionally lo-fi, old-timey bluegrass and country sound over the psychedelic and soul detours of his previous albums. The album features a guest turn from Willie Nelson on “Juanita” and stands as Simpson’s final release under his own name before he began recording as Johnny Blue Skies. Its brevity and narrative focus mark a deliberate return to traditionalist roots after years of genre experimentation.
