Recorded as Wonder transitioned from teenage prodigy to self-directed artist, the album marks his first LP with a co-production credit, alongside veteran Motown hands Henry Cosby, Ron Miller, and Tom Baird. It spawned four charting singles, including the title track “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours” and “Heaven Help Us All,” both of which became staples of his live catalog. The album reached #25 on the Billboard 200 and #7 on the R&B Albums chart, and its blend of gospel, soul, and burgeoning funk arrangements pointed the way toward the run of self-produced classics he released over the following few years. Critics at the time singled it out as one of the strongest male soul records of 1970.
