In Step, released in 1989, was Stevie Ray Vaughan’s fourth studio album with Double Trouble and the last issued during his lifetime, made after he entered rehab and got sober. The title track “Crossfire” hit No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and the record won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Recording. Closing instrumental “Riviera Paradise,” recorded in a single overnight take, is often singled out as one of Vaughan’s most emotionally direct performances, and the album as a whole is regarded as the fullest realization of his songwriting and playing.
