Recorded in 1987-88 and produced by Judith Sherman, this Nonesuch release brings together Different Trains, Reich’s Grammy Award-winning 1988 piece for string quartet and taped voices that juxtaposes his own childhood train trips across America with the deportation trains of the Holocaust, and Electric Counterpoint, a three-movement work for multi-tracked electric guitars famously recorded by Pat Metheny. The Kronos Quartet’s performance of Different Trains remains one of the most acclaimed recordings in the modern classical repertoire, earning the 1990 Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition. This 2018 vinyl pressing marked the 30th anniversary of the Kronos Quartet’s world premiere performance of the piece. Together the two works showcase Reich’s pioneering use of tape manipulation and phase-based minimalism.
