Produced by Jerry Dammers and Dave Jordan at Horizon Studios in Coventry, More Specials moved away from the live-band ska of the group’s debut toward layered studio overdubs and eerie easy-listening atmospherics, splitting the record into a ‘Songs Side’ and a ‘Muzak Side.’ Singles ‘Stereotypes’/’International Jet Set’ and ‘Do Nothing’ both reached the UK Top 10, while the album climbed to #5 on the UK Albums Chart and earned Gold certification. Tracks like ‘Man at C&A’ and the album’s stylistic reach later influenced trip-hop acts including Massive Attack and Portishead. Featured in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, More Specials remains a critical favorite despite the internal tensions that splintered the band shortly after its release. This 40th-anniversary half-speed mastered vinyl edition gives the album an audiophile remaster for its milestone anniversary.
