Recorded at the Magic Shop in New York with producer Butch Vig, fresh off Nirvana’s Nevermind, and mixed by Andy Wallace, Dirty found Sonic Youth channeling their noise-rock experimentation into tighter, more song-oriented structures without sacrificing their signature detuned guitar textures. The album spawned four singles, including ‘Sugar Kane’ and ‘Youth Against Fascism,’ the latter featuring a guest guitar spot from Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye, and touched on politically charged themes ranging from the Rodney King verdict to reproductive rights and the Gulf War. Dirty reached No. 83 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 in the UK, the band’s highest UK chart position, and was later named Entertainment Weekly’s best album of 1992. This 2016 reissue expands the original single LP into a 2LP set remastered from the original analog tapes.
