Sigur Ros | Odin’s Raven Magic (Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, Steindor Andersen & Ma | Vinyl

Adapting the medieval Icelandic poem Hrafnagaldur Óðins, this collaborative work pairs Sigur Rós with composer Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, rímur singer Steindór Andersen, and string arranger María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, alongside a custom stone marimba built by sculptor Páll Guðmundsson. The piece premiered live at London’s Barbican Centre in April 2002 and again at the Reykjavík Arts Festival that May, but the studio recording of the roughly hour-long, eight-movement piece wasn’t formally released until December 2020. Its dense orchestral textures and traditional Icelandic vocal chanting mark one of Sigur Rós’s most experimental and least conventionally rock releases. The original 2002 production was documented in the film Screaming Masterpiece (Gargandi snilld), directed by Ari Alexander Ergis Magnússon.
