Self-taught pianist Ryo Fukui recorded Scenery in Sapporo, Japan in 1976 as his debut album, backed by a trio playing a set of standards and one original composition. Largely overlooked outside Japan at the time of its release, in part due to declining American interest in acoustic jazz during the era, the album has since built a devoted international following through reissues and word of mouth among collectors, with the opening track “Early Summer” frequently singled out for praise. Fukui’s playing draws comparisons to McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans, marked by a confident touch he developed largely through independent study. This reissue from We Release Jazz brings the long out-of-print Japanese original back to wider circulation on vinyl.
